Week 5: Christmas Tree

What can you do this year with your tree besides buy more ornaments, special garland or a new tree topper?

This year, you can try a simple tree. Use natural items like popcorn, cranberries or cookies.

You can turn your old metal cookie cutters into ornaments. Or paint pinecones with glitter.

The kids or you can make paper craft ornaments. My parents still use their clothespin ornaments they made when they were first married.

You probably already have enough ornaments without making them. As long as you aren’t worried about having the “in” tree display.  You don’t even have to put all your ornaments on the tree. I think this year we put about half of the ornaments up and it looks beautiful.

As much as I love sparkly tinsel we never put it on our tree. I’m always worried our cat will try to swallow it. Plus we could still be vacuuming it up until Easter. (Just in time for easter grass.)

Remember you don’t have to adorn every inch of a Christmas tree for it to be beautiful.

I’m allergic to evergreen so we always have a fake tree. A couple years ago we saved tons of time by getting a prelit tree.

If you get a real tree, you can find out where to recycle it here: Treecycling

Bigger is not always better. Especially if you don’t have the room and have to keep squishing by the tree. Have a tree that fits your house, not overpowers it.

You also don’t need a tree at all. If it is a big pain for you and doesn’t bring much joy, don’t put one up. I know when the kids were toddlers we had a few years without a tree (to save my sanity).

When Christmas is done be sure to discard broken ornaments and lights. And here are some tips for storing ornaments: Thrify Fun
